Humble Beginnings
Starting out in 2013, James Smalley took his skills and expertise in construction and created Earth-Tech Civils (ETC) – a humble family-owned excavation and earthworks contractor in Geelong for small-scale projects.
Then, the word spread in Geelong
As a business in regional and rural Victoria, reputation and word-of-mouth is everything (and people love a bit of gossip). The word spread around Geelong that ETC Group were an impressive team of civil construction professionals delivering outstanding work in record time and on budget. Things snowballed from there (in a good way).

UK-born but Australia-bound, James Smalley has spent over 20 years in the civil construction, landscaping, and drainage industries where he’s learnt a thing or two about what groundbreaking service looks like.
In 2013, James took his industry expertise and ‘can-do’ attitude to create ETC Group and build it to where it is today. Since then, James’ tireless efforts in forging a powerful reputation in both residential and commercial earthworks have paid off, with ETC Group rated among the best contractors in the Geelong region.
James’ positivity, sense of humour, down-the-line honesty, and undying dedication to client satisfaction form the backbones of ETC Group’s continued success.
We have all the necessary paperwork and credentials
All our excavation team members have confined space training. Likewise, our dedicated earthmoving specialists are trenching and shoring trained.
ETC Group is a full-fledged member of the Civil Contractor’s Federation.
We are fully licensed. Our ABN is 79 165 569 871 and our ACN is 165 569 871. We are also fully insured with up to $20M public liability.
